Five environmental campaigns for the 50th Earth Day
April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the day 10% of the American population took to the streets to protest environmental degradation, launching Earth Day, and with it, the modern environmental movement. It would be tempting for Earth Day 2020 to be a bit nostalgic and focus on the history and successes of this movement. But the environmental challenges we face today – with climate change first among them – are too urgent.
“It’s not about what we’ve accomplished. We are looking to the future rather than the past, ”said Kathleen Rogers, President of the Earth Day Network.
“We wanted to create a very large tent. We looked for ways to be an activist or not while staying involved, ”she said. Looking at what has worked over the past 50 years, the Earth Day Network found several effective strategies, which they have summarized in the acronym SAVE.
- Ssocial Aactivism – Walks, speeches, rallies and other forms of civic engagement.
- VVolunteering – Planting trees, cleaning up litter and other hands-on activities that directly improve the environment.
- Eeducation – Raise awareness of environmental issues and the science behind the solutions.
Among these various approaches, Rogers said he discovered that there was something that everyone could participate in. Regardless of politics or temper, there is a part of the environmental movement that they can support.
The pandemic disrupted many of their initial plans. But Earth Day Network still wants to activate at least a billion people around the world for their 50e anniversary theme of climate action. They have developed five campaigns that support SAVE’s different approaches to the environment.
EARTHRISE is a global intergenerational social activism movement for climate action. Although many planned marches and demonstrations had to be canceled, EARTHRISE is now looking to digitally engage millions of people around the world around April 22, 2020.
The Great Global Cleanup is a global volunteer campaign to remove billions of trash from neighborhoods, beaches, rivers, lakes, trails and parks. Individuals and, where it is safe to congregate, groups work to directly reduce waste and plastic pollution, improve habitats, and prevent damage to wildlife and humans.
Earth Challenge 2020 is an education campaign. It is also the largest global citizen science initiative ever. Earth Challenge will provide everyday people with the tools they need to report on the health and well-being of the environment, from water quality and air quality to species that surround them.
Foodprints for the Future combines education and volunteering. This campaign aims first of all to make individuals aware of the climate impacts of our food system. And it encourages everyone to make individual choices that minimize these impacts.
Artists for the Earth is a global education campaign that invites artists from around the world in all disciplines to use the power of their art in the service of the environment.
